Target Cases

The purpose of Patrol Cases is to share free education to both professional and volunteer ski patrollers. The cases target complaints, symptoms, and presentations that are either:

  1. Sufficiently uncommon that a new patroller may not have encountered them, or;
  2. Common and deserving of attention to the nuances that will lead to excellence in care.

Patrols Are Varied

These cases are provided for use in personal and team education. I have made every attempt to ensure that the information included is up-to-date with the medical literature and standards of care. However, the care suggested may not align with your protocols. As the adage goes, if you’ve seen one ski patrol, you’ve seen one ski patrol. The resources available to each patrol, and their operating circumstances, are such that what is normal for one could be outlandish for another. Please use your judgment and imagination to align the circumstances of the case with your operating environment. Do not violate your protocols because of information included here.

How to Read and Learn

Begin by reading the initial case. When you encounter the included pauses, stop and think of how you would respond to the prompt before proceeding. Then, and only then, refer to the answer section to reveal suggested considerations and responses.

If printing the cases for your patrol, consider copying and pasting the case into a text document. Print cases and answers on separate pages.
